Junior Honour Choir Weekend!, 2014

(new dates!) May 30-31 - Prince Albert

A Great new program offering in 2014!

Dear Choral and Voice Teachers,
The SMEA would like to invite your voice and choir students to participate in the 2014 Junior Honour Choir weekend. The two-day event will be taking place May 30-31 in Prince Albert Saskatchewan. It is designed to create an enriched musical experience for talented young Vocalists in our province. We are looking for students in grades 7-9 who are involved in their school or church choir programs, and/or private voice studios. These students should show enthusiasm for singing and excitement for new musical experiences.

Communication will be taking place through email. Please forward this information to any other choir directors or voice teachers you know who might be interested.

Where: St Mary High School, Prince Albert
When: May 30 - 31
Who can Participate: This project is intended for choir or voice students from grades
7-9.Voice and choir teachers in Saskatchewan are invited to nominate students who are in their second year (or more) of singing and show strong musical ability. Exceptional first year singers can also be chosen by the teacher. Please recommend students from all voices (soprano, alto and boys) to help achieve a balanced choir.
Student Commitment: We ask that the students you select take the responsibility to learn the basics of their music (correct rhythms and notes) with your assistance and professional guidance, prior to the event. Recordings of their vocal parts will be available on the internet. Links to these audio files and sheet music will accompany acceptance letters.
It is important that you speak with the students prior to recommending them to see if they can participate in the weekend. Students that are accepted must participate in the entire weekend. A student dropping out at the last minute leaves a vacancy that could have been filled by another student.

Format: During the two days the students will experience sectionals and full choir rehearsals with experienced choral and voice directors and accompanists.
The weekend will conclude with a public concert on Saturday at 2:00pm.
Cost: All students that are recommended need to send a cheque for $50 to register for the event. This includes a Tshirt, CD of the concert, and two lunches. Concert admission will be by silver collection. Students are responsible for their own transportation, other meals and accommodation. IF A STUDENT IS NOT ACCEPTED THEIR CHEQUE WILL BE VOIDED AND SENT BACK TO THEM.
Accommodations: Accommodations will be the responsibility of the student and their parents. Please note that students will be supervised during all Junior Choir activities during the day. There will not be chaperones during the night. If a child is residing in a hotel overnight, a parent is required to stay with the child.
Student Selection Process: After April 17th 2014 the organizational committee will meet and work to create balanced choir with as much representation from across Saskatchewan as possible. Please note that this may mean not all of the students you recommend will participate in Saskatchewan Junior Choir. Teachers will be notified of the student participation list in Late April.

Choir Director and Voice Teacher Involvement:
1. Please distribute the forms that are attached to the students you have selected as soon as possible.
2. Physically mail all of your students forms with cheques attached. Please have them post marked by April 17th, 2014.
