Advertising on Music Education Online

As you are aware, Music Education Online (.org and .com) is designed to be "revenue neutral", in that the costs of webmastering and hosting the website are balanced by advertising revenues. Development costs for designing and building the site (Phase 1) have been provided through the New Media Fund. SaskTel has provided a variety of development opportunities for the site by providing close consultation regarding future technical implementations.

In setting advertising rates, we must make the case that Music Education Online provides the "reach" and "frequency" that an advertiser requires.

Reach

Our primary traditional advertising buyers (companies who have advertised before with the founding music organizations) have seen merit in communicating with music teachers/directors (per se). The website will offer significant improvements .....

  • World wide audience.
  • Reach has expanded downwards to students.
  • Reach has expanded outwards to parents (with students currently involved in music)
  • Reach has expanded outwards to parents (with students soon to be involved in music)

The expansion of the audience(s) for our site is significant to the advertisers, because they can have much more immediate, person to person communication with more people who potentially buy their products and services personally or as part of school music programs.

Music Education Online.org is viewable by almost every student (6 - 12) and teacher in Saskatchewan as well. It will be viewed predominantly by both music students and teacher/directors. Its resource areas can be integrated as useful curriculum materials, since all links have been rated and reviewed by music teachers. In conjunction with URL filtering (which avoids inappropriate sites and which is used in almost every school), this site provides productive research and reference for students.

As the audience expands, other advertisers start to be attracted. We may for instance have advertisers who are not directly involved in music education products or services who may wish access this audience, and purchase an appropriate package (see Packages Available).

Frequency

The number of times the audience (or sector of the audience) sees an advertising message is called the frequency. Most advertising is rationallized upon the concept that repeated impressions are a good thing. The advertising "rate card" is then based upon combinations of "message presentations" for a rationallized cost.

By "imbedding" certain resource materials in the site, it is possible to increase the number of impressions a user will experience. There will also be an increase in frequency when the pages are viewed repeatedly (such as the calendar, forums and links) by the same user.

By implementing the SaskTel QuantumLynx hosting service, we will be able to count "hits" on the website. We have the objective of delivering as many hits as possible.

Unlike most websites, Music Edication Online.org is also an intranet. An intranet is a "sub-network" which provides special services to select groups within the general audience. In our case, the intranet provides a security barrier which keeps certain forums closed to all but the members. This confidentiality is important to functioning committees for instance, since strategic issues may be discussed before ratification by the group as a whole.

It is also important for future e-commerce potentials.

Since all current members of the founding groups have access to their intranet(s) for free, banners in these areas will have a higher chance of attracting a viewer.

Sustaining Sponsor

Music Education Online.org receives 0% funding from Sask Lotteries, however to reflect Lotteries funding of the founding groups, a Lotteries icon appears on the homepages of the groups.

As one of the key facilitators of the site, and because Sympatico is providing support materials to our site, a SaskTel logo appears at the bottom of every page where we can. There are some cases where this icon may be obtrusive (such as on a form) and it may be left off in those special cases.

A category of Sustaining Sponsor will be available to advertisers who wish to reflect their support of the site as a tax deductable donation. The following dynamics describe a sustaining sponsor package:

  • $2000/year. (1999/2000 rates to be priced to Sept 1/2000).
  • Linked Banner on all Music Education Online.org pages.
  • quarterly report (Tells them "Who's Hitting?"
