Saskatchewan Music Educators Association
Honour Band / Honour Choir - updating for 2018 soon... Read this!

The SMEA is launching a significantly updated (and totally fantastic) new website that will allow you to submit audition files as well as audition and/or recommendation forms ENTIRELY online! Participants will also be able to pay their registration fees online, making the entire Honour Groups 2018 process more streamlined, efficient, and convenient for teachers, parents, and students.

While the website is not currently operational, teachers and parents are encouraged to get started on the recording process for auditioning students (requirements below). Stay tuned for updates on website launch, at which point all online submissions can be completed.

Our new website is Haydn in the background for now, but don’t worry… we’ll be Bach soon!

In the meantime, don’t let the lack of Honour Groups 2018 information Strauss you out. Holst your horses - don’t un-Ravel! The info is here! Start making your Liszt of students you’d like to encourage for this great opportunity, and start recording their audition tracks. Soon the website will be ready for your submissions…. and then we’ll be Orff and running!

Band & Choir General Information

Eligibility: This opportunity is open to any Saskatchewan student enrolled in Grade 9 -12 at the start of the school year (Sept 2017). Applicants are expected to perform at a high school level (or beyond) in all aspects of music. Placement in an Honour Group is at the discretion of the auditioning adjudicators. All auditions are anonymous. There is zero tolerance for auditions which contain "identity indicating" speech of any kind. (Placement in the Provincial Honour Choir is done through teacher evaluations and some by independent audition.)

Cost of Participation: SMEA is waiving the $10 audition fee per group/instrument to which they apply and provide an MP3 audition, as a recognition of SMEA's 60th Anniversary! There is no audition charge($10) required for 2017.
This fee is non-refundable and must be included with the Audition Form. Forms for "E-mailed" MP3 Auditions must be received before the deadline. Students selected for participation will be required to pay a $150 registration fee. This fee includes participation in the Honour Groups Program, a T-shirt, professional picture, and professional CD archive recording of the concert.

Rehearsal and Performance Dates: The Honour Groups 2017 will take place in Regina from Thursday Oct 26 (noon) to Saturday Oct 28) with Gala Concert at 4:30 PM Oct 28, 2017. The recorded performance will take place in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Music Conference, oct 26, 27, 28 - 2017. Musicians failing to attend any rehearsal may be required to withdraw from their respective group.

Audition: Applicants are responsible for recording and sending in a good quality recording of the audition materials required. Submissions should be made using the MP3 format.

1. Send one file (MP3) for the audition, not a separate MP3 for each audition element.
If you are auditioning on more than one instrument/voice, a separate MP3 file, form and fee is required for each audition submitted. You must
specify your first choice, second choice etc.

2. DO NOT record (say) your name or the name of your school on the audition recording, but DO name the MP3 file itself with your name and instrument. Also, include student name and instrument in the email header and also in the body of the email.

3. The use of high quality recording equipment is encouraged for the most accurate reproduction of your audition performance. Use a "medium" compression setting for your MP3 compressor. A student's audition MP3 should be about 2MB. Contact the registrar (g.steen.smea@sasktel.net) if you have questions.

Submission: Each audition recording must be accompanied by the appropriate form (links above). MP3's submitted without being properly identified with student name, instrument/voice, and not having a corresponding signed form will be discarded.

Any submissions to SMEA become the property of SMEA and will not be returned.
