David Newell taught music for thirty years in the public schools of Berea, Ohio. Additionally, he taught part–time in the Music Education Department at Baldwin–Wallace College for firteen years. During his tenure as Director of Bands at Ford Middle School, Mr. Newell developed one of the exmplary band programs in the state and served as Chair of the Music and Art Departments. Chosen as one of the school district’s first Consulting Teachers, he was responsible for guiding new music teachers through a three–year mentoring process.

In 1979, Mr. Newell received the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation’s “Master Teacher” Award for Excellence in the Classroom. He also receive the “Alumni Achievement” Award from Baldwin–Wallace College in 1987.

Mr. Newell earned his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Arts in Education degrees from Baldwin–Wallace College and has taken post–graduate courses at Akron, Celveland State, Kent State, and Northwestern Universities. Currently, he publishes with Neil Al. Kjos Music Company. Among his works are Bach and Before for Band, Classic Christmas Carols for Band, Classic Christmas Carols for Choir, and Bach and Before for Strings.

Dr. Wendy McCallum received her Bachelor of Music (1992) and Bachelor of Education (1994) degrees from Brandon University. After graduation, she taught in Blumenort, Manitoba, before accepting a position as Director of Bands at Neepawa and Area Collegiate Institute. She was Assistant Director of Bands at Vincent Massey Collegiate Institute in Brandon in 1998-9. McCallum completed a Master of Music in instrumental conducting at the University of North Dakota — Grand Forks in 2001 and completed her DMA in conducting, with a cognate in music education, at the University of North Texas — Denton (March 2004). McCallum is a highly sought after clinician, conductor, and adjudicator in Canada and the United States and was formerly Assistant Professor and Director of Bands at Graceland University (Iowa).

Regina native Jonathan McCaslin graduated from Jazz Studies at McGill Unviersity in 1999. During his studies, he worked with some of the finest jazz educators in Canada, including Gordon Foote and Michel Lambert, and attended the Banff Centre for the Arts summer jazz workshop. In 2002, he completed his Masters in Jazz Studies at McGill Univeristy. The following year, he released his debut CD, McCallum’s Island, featuring his jazz quintet. In 2003, he received a fellowship from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and attended the “Betty Carter Jazz Ahead” residency in Washington, D.C. He received the artists research grant from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2004 and studied with jazz drummer Matt Wilson. From 2004-06, he toured internationally with the music production troupe Barrage. He is currently completing his Doctorate in Musical Arts through the University of Toronto.

Gene Aulinger is in his eighteenth year with the Battleford School Division. During this time, he was the high school band and choir director, and the Music Consultant for sixteen years. He is currently the Arts Consultant. Previous to his time in the Battlefords, he was a full time band director with the Kindersley School Division for fourteen years. He has also served as the director of the North Battleford City Kinsmen Band, the Battlefords Concert Band, and the Battlefords Jazz Band.

Aulinger taught at the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts at Fort San during its last eight summers of operation. He has served on the board of the Saskatchewan Music Educators Association (SMEA) and Saskatchewan Band Association (SBA), and also coordinated the SMEA Honour Groups five different years. He was the coordinator of the Summer Band Camp at North Battleford for five years. He has adjudicated festivals and led workshop in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Aulinger holds a Bachelor of Arts in music performance and teaching credentials from the University of Wisconsin, as well as a Masters in Music in Performance and Conducting from Northwestern State University, Louisiana (1998).

Brenda Robinson is a speaker, trainer, writer and consultant with a passion for working with people. She has been addressing groups for over twenty years on topics related to communications, humour, laughter, positive working skills and wellness in general. Robinson lives in Sherwood Park, Alberta where she and her husband, Len, have their training and development business. Robinson received her Bachelor of Arts from Brandon University in Brandon, Manitoba (Major in English) and her Masters of Education from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. in 1998.

Podium-Canada's National Choral Conference - May 22nd, 2010 in Saskatoon

There will be a workshop entitled Focus on Youth that will take place on Saturday May 22nd. It is for grades 9-12 students with a day of choral activities. It runs from 10:30am to 6:00pm and include three concerts, a workshop with award winning Vancouver composer/arranger, choral director, musician, educator and engaging speaker, Brian Tate.

Saskatchewan Orchestral Assoc. Conducting Workshop with Wayne Toews

The Saskatchewan Orchestral Association is sponsoring an international conducting workshop in the Saito method with Wayne Toews on the campus of the University of Saskatchewan from July 11 to 18, 2010. The workshop is suitable for experienced musicians working with professional, amateur and student ensembles. The instructional team includes Dianne Gryba, Bonnie Nicholson and George Charpentier.
